Locally grown. We just want to take a moment to tell you about the difference buying locally grown makes when it comes to buying flowers.
Firstly there are benefits from supporting Australian growers and the Australian flower industry – that much is to be expected. Supporting Australian growers ensures a continuing, thriving industry and that builds a strong flower community. Then there are the benefits of a reduced carbon footprint that comes with not importing items that can be grown right here.
What you may not realise, however, is the benefit to those enjoying the flowers, namely their extended life expectancy. Less travel time (and altered conditions through travel) makes a huge difference to the longevity of the flower. That means that if you are giving locally grown flowers as a gift, they will bring joy for so much longer and that’s definitely what we want!
From the photographers perspective, it means that the flowers can be shot day after day for many days and being able to capture them at various stages of their lifecycle but knowing they will always look gorgeous at each stage.
Like with choosing seasonal fruit and vegetables, there may be instances where our first choices may not be available. It may be March and you’re hankering for a peony – well that may lead to some disappointment initially, but it just means we need to broaden our horizons; it’s the perfect opportunity to discover something different yet equally glorious – say a dahlia or David Austin rose. You truly won’t be disappointed as we are utterly spoiled for choice and, in the end, it is better for everyone!
So, here’s to us all being ethical, community building, eco-warriors who also get to enjoy their flowers for a very, very long time!
